The ancient handicraft, knitting has been around in some form since the 5th Century.
Hand knitting was prolific during war times, as mothers and sisters knitted socks and sent them away to their loved ones.
Knitting is basically a way of using long needles to join or knot a series of loops made by one long thread. Each loop or stitch connects to another and when enough loops have been produced, the result is a flat piece of fabric called textile which can be made into a piece of clothing.
Traditionally, knitting was made using natural fleece or fibre from animals and plants. Nowadays there are many manmade fibres made into yarns, but naturals fibres are still valued as the manufacturing processes are better for the environment and workers.
Knitting is relaxing, fun and practical and if you would like to begin to knit yourself a scarf, join one of my Knitting Beginner Workshops.
