The Indigo Bell Sewing School

The Indigo Bell Sewing School is conveniently located at Empire Bay near the Woy Woy Peninsula on the Central Coast, New South Wales. I have created a program that will teach you to be creative and by learning to sew and stitch allow you to transform your once unwanted garments into unique fashion statements. 
 
I have experimented with textile techniques using different fibres to upcycle, manipulate and recreate items to give them a new life. I search out old, rescued fabric, yarn or other fibres to weave, felt, knit, crochet and sew into a new textile art piece.
 
I have a lifetime of experience in teaching and a passion for all things sewing and stitching and up-cycling to save clothes from landfill.
 
Learning to sew and hand stitch equips you with the skills to revamp your current garments, give them a new lease of life and make something completely unique for the new season.

Skills Needed to Upcycle and Create Unique Garments

Sewing Machine Basics Lesson

Suitable for complete beginners. If you have recently bought a new sewing machine. or would like a reminder of how to use yours, this is the perfect sewing lesson for you!

You will learn:

  • To thread the sewing machine, 
  • Learn the various stitches and 
  • Learn about the stitch lengths, and when to use them as well as back stitching. 
  • You will be able to hem one of your garments at the end of your lesson.

This is a private one-on-one lesson.

Sewing Machine Mending Lesson

One-on-one private sewing class suitable for those who have completed the Sewing Machine Basics Lesson or are confident in using a sewing machine.

Please note that I teach you how to use your sewing machine to hem clothes, renew elastic waist bands and mend and up-cycle your clothes. 

You will be able to hem some of your garments at the end of your lesson.

I do not teach you how to make clothes from patterns.

Crochet Beginner Lesson

This introductory crochet one on one lesson is designed to make learning the craft fun and easy.

You will learn the basics of crochet, such as how to hold the hook and yarn and to crochet basic stitches such as the chain, single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet and slip stitches.

Participants will be exposed to various projects and will leave the beginnings of a new scarf.

Crochet Freeform Lesson

This lesson is perfect for those who have some basic crochet experience.

In this one on one lesson, basic crochet stitches are used to create amazing and sometimes complex shapes combining the artistry of colour and design to collate your crocheted pieces together to create a unique wearable scarf.

Sashiko Beginner Lesson

This is an introductory one on one lesson suitable for Beginners.

In this lesson, the basics you need to know about Sashiko stitching are explained as well as the fabric, needles and thread used.

You will practise Sashiko stitches and patterns on fabric patches and learn different ways to keep stitches uniform.

Embroidery Beginner Lesson

This is an introductory one on one lesson suitable for beginners.

In the Hand Embroidery Beginner Lesson, you will learn how to make many embroidery stitches to decorate or mend your clothes and take home a sampler so you can immediately begin to embroider.

Embroidery Freeform Lesson

In this one on one hand embroidery lesson you can be loose, free, relaxed and go where your thread takes you when stitching.

Use many different colours, change directions, and sew your favourite stitch in varied combinations.

Freeform embroideries are made just for fun, the excitement of stitching and the spilling of colourful threads and yarns all over your fabric.

Sashiko Meets Freeform Embroidery Lesson

This is an advanced one on one lesson suitable for students who have Sashiko and embroidery stitching experience.

Further practice of more complex Sashiko patterns combined with freeform embroidery. This embroidery is the imaginative use of stitches without patterns.

In this class, learn the art and design of combining Sashiko style stitching with freeform embroidery for decorative reinforcement and embellishment.

Also learn creative ways to insert and secure patches.
