CROCHET TECHNIQUES

TRADITIONAL CROCHET

Crochet is an art that uses a crochet hook and fiber such as yarn, thread or even twine to create crocheted fabric. Crochet creates fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with a crochet hook.

Traditional crochet is typically orderly; you’d expect it to be worked in well-organised rounds or rows. You could expect to work from a pattern, and the end result would be a useful project. In other words, you end up with a hat, an afghan, or a scarf.

FREEFORM CROCHET

One of the most important definitions of crochet in freeform is “scrumbling”.

Scrumbling means to crochet several different pieces, often using different colors, textures, and stitches, and then join them together to create the finished piece.

Freeform crochet is all about tossing out any pattern and creating your own design. Your technique may not include orderly rows or repeated textures. It may result in a work of crochet art rather than a usable item, although it is possible to make completely functional items using the technique as well. The most straightforward crochet definition for this niche of the craft is patternless crochet.

BROOMSTICK CROCHET

Broomstick crochet is easy to learn and a great way to create all sorts of lacy fabrics. Traditionally, the technique was worked using a crochet hook and the handle of a broomstick (hence the name), but nowadays there are plenty of other options. Broomstick lace crochet is known by various other names including:

  • Peacock stitch
  • Jiffy lace
  • Witchcraft lace (in the USA)
  • Lattice loop (in Sweden).

They all use the same basic method

TUNISIAN CROCHET

Tunisian crochet is a type of crochet that holds multiple loops on the hook in a style similar to what is done in knitting.

It differs from knitting in that it uses a crochet hook, not knitting needles.

The result is a fabric that is beautifully textured using a technique that combines the best of knitting and crochet.

Tunisian crochet is also commonly known as Afghan Crochet. It has also been called by a variety of other names including Shepherd’s Knitting, Railroad Knitting and Cro-hooking.
